Web based electronic multimedia archive

The system was developed to spare the user the handling of physical pictures (negative and paper copies). It handles images in electronic form in most of the formats that exist today. The image producer delivers and registers the image in the archive, with data about the picture’s content, logical group belonging etc. The multimedia archive user can thereafter search and shop for images in the archive. Images can be delivered in different formats and sizes "on the fly" or in a basket via e-mail.

An administrator can create users who can get access to the archive with different levels of access rights. The multi media archive also has a large number of web-based functions for maintenance and administration. The system is developed so that it is relatively easy to change ”shell” (layout/design/language) without having to change the under lying functionality. Some support for moving images and sound is also available. The system is developed with Open-source software, but has been run under several different platforms (Windows NT/IIS/SQL-server, Linux/Apache/PostgreSQL).

The server application was programmed in Perl under Linux, the database used was PostgreSQL and for the image handling was the Open-source product ImageMagick used. A large library for the handling of JavaScripts at the client’s side is also available. To the Multimedia archive there is also a Windows based web application written in Visual Basic that simplifies the registration of a large number of images.
